Denine’s Mission Statement
Our goal for this foundation is to educate and empower young adults, specifically college students, in understanding that in many cases when they go off to college, they will be without parental supervision and medical emergencies can occur. First off, the foundation would like to address to all that however rare issues in the brain and heart are in young adults, we believe these would be on the highest level of priority due to the overriding factors. Denine was taken too soon due to exactly this, but she would want us to educate all future young adults and college students on steps they can take to insure their livelihoods on the rarest of occasions and worst of emergencies. College students, when taking into consideration their university, often overlook a vital component to their livelihoods, which is the proximity to quality healthcare. If the area in which these college students reside does not have proper medical care, as in the case of Denine, parents must be prepared to fly their kids home immediately to see their personal doctors if an emergency does arise. Frankly, no one thinks that college students are suffering with a life-threatening issue due to their youth, and in Denine’s case the EMT and urgent care professionals assumed that she was just another student on, or formerly on “drugs” or “too drunk” for them an excuse to circumvent protocol and not transport her in a most unfortunate condition. However, we know our bodies, and Denine knew that it was worse than the doctors were making it out to seem, so we want to empower young people to be better advocates for themselves by having them create meaningful relationships with local doctors, having an emergency plan, and providing power of attorney to their parents so that they can be the students advocates when the students are unable to be the best advocate for themselves. Ultimately, the goal of this foundation is to suggest steps in the case of an emergency for young adults that are often ill-equipped to maneuver. As well as this we will shine light on debilitating issues of the brain and heart, and how we can take steps to keep our bodies alive and well.
